DR. DAVID HOFFERT: 2020 Man of the Year

In recognition of his tremendous service to Kosciusko County the students, faculty and staff of Warsaw Community Schools, our 2020 Man of the Year is Dr. David Hoffert!

Dr. David Hoffert is an exemplary leader with a strong desire to serve others. He is an inspiration to not only those he works with, but to our entire community. “Whatever it takes” is a common phrase heard from him, often followed by, “how can I help?” He continuously embraces the opportunity to give back to Kosciusko County through his involvement in many local organizations, serving on multiple nonprofit boards and committees. David and his wife often volunteer their time at Baker Youth Club by serving meals, leading STEM activities and teaching kids how to roller skate. He recognizes the importance of high-quality and affordable after school programs, so he works to ensure that students have transportation, meals and quality programming opportunities.

As a lifelong resident of Kosciusko County and a graduate of Warsaw Community High School, David never dreamed that his degree in secondary education would lead him back to his hometown. In 2002, he was hired as a social studies teacher at his alma mater, Warsaw Community High School.

In 2014, he completed his Ph.D. in educational leadership and was hired the superintendent of Warsaw Community Schools. During David’s tenure as superintendent, his commitment to furthering STEM education has been second to no other district in Indiana, boasting the first STEM certified elementary school in the state. He cares deeply about every student and staff member that enters the doors of Warsaw Community Schools. He understands the importance of creating safe schools and promoting academic excellence, as well as social and emotional wellness.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Warsaw Community Schools continued to provide meals to thousands of families through their weekly food distribution. Although it was not required of him to be there, David was present nearly every week. One nominator said, “walking into the kitchen or cafeteria on any given day, he willingly and genuinely offered to help. Similar to an episode of ‘Undercover Boss,’ he worked shoulder to shoulder with us, whether it was preparing the vegetable of the day, washing dishes or wiping tables.”

When the time came for school to start again, David felt that bringing students back in person was critical for their learning, development and overall wellbeing. As a result, Warsaw Community Schools was one of the first school systems in the state to bring students back in-person and became one of only a few districts to remain open throughout the fall semester.

His leadership throughout the years has impacted our community in ways that cannot possibly be measured, but their effect can undeniably be felt. In a letter to the selection committee a second nominator said, “our community is so blessed to have a leader that truly understands what it means to be a servant. I have watched with admiration as he personally takes time to meet with teachers, employees and students who are struggling.”

David is an accomplished educator and leader, but more importantly he truly lives “love your neighbor as yourself.”
